Around a third of the largest US newspapers shut out European visitors rather than comply. USA Today kept European readers and served them a stripped back version of the site. Once full access returned, the total time UK readers spent on the site went <strong>above<\/strong> where it had been before the restriction started. Fewer visitors, more attention from each of them.<\/p>\n\n<p>A US-only block also catches the wrong people. Americans make 80 to 99 million overseas trips a year, and between 4.4 and 5.5 million live abroad full time. Every one of them looks foreign to your firewall while holding an American card and an American subscription.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Four rules that replace the block<\/h2>\n\n<ol>\n  <li style=\"margin-bottom:14px;\"><strong>Never redirect or block a visitor because of their IP address.<\/strong> Google crawls almost entirely from US addresses. Put a redirect on a content URL and the crawler only ever reaches your American pages, so every other market goes unindexed. The redirect meant to help those markets is the reason they cannot be found.<\/li>\n\n  <li style=\"margin-bottom:14px;\"><strong>Give each market its own URL, in a subfolder on one domain.<\/strong> With yoursite.com\/uk\/, \/de\/ and \/us\/, every link and every mention builds the same domain. Separate country domains split that authority, and separate brand names split the brand demand too, so save both for a trademark conflict or a legal requirement.<\/li>\n\n  <li style=\"margin-bottom:14px;\"><strong>Speak to search engines and to people separately.<\/strong> An hreflang tag is a line of code in the page head telling Google that another version of this page exists for another country. It speaks only to search engines, so it cannot tell your visitor anything. People need a dismissible banner and a country switcher in the header. Most broken setups have built one of the two and assumed it covered both.<\/li>\n\n  <li style=\"margin-bottom:14px;\"><strong>Put the restriction on the transaction, never on the page.<\/strong> Alcohol, pharmaceuticals, gambling, media licensing and shipping rights all restrict selling or providing the thing. None of them restrict publishing a page about it. Pfizer still does not block. Loaded from a German IP address, pfizer.com serves the full page and puts a country selector in the header. The regulatory limit gets handled with a notice and a local site rather than by refusing the request.<\/p>\n\n<p>If a drug company can solve this with a notice, a software company selling in one country can too.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What if the wrong country&#8217;s page ranks?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The worry is that a US page will rank for a British searcher. It will happen, and it barely matters. The visitor arrives, reads the banner telling them a British version exists, clicks across and buys. The cost is one extra click. Having nothing of yours indexed in Britain costs the entire sale, because the visitor never arrives and buys from a competitor instead.<\/p>\n\n<p>One case does deserve attention: an English page ranking for a German-language query, where the visitor may not be able to read the banner offering to move them. That is the argument for labelling each market in its own language, the way Apple&#8217;s country selector does.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Stop paying more for links that do less<\/h2>\n\n<p>Plenty of teams still ask for UK links to point at the UK site and German links at the German site. Nothing in the way Google works supports it. The country a link comes from is not a geo-targeting signal in any of Google&#8217;s published guidance. Local links tend to arrive alongside local relevance, because local publishers write about local subjects, and that correlation gets read backwards as a rule.<\/p>\n\n<p>The bill for following it is real. The pool of relevant publishers inside one market is a fraction of the international pool, so the price per placement climbs. Then add native-language outreach, a local agency, translated assets and local media research. Meanwhile the authority coming back is usually lower than an international publication covering the same subject would have handed you.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"border:1px solid #ff2d70;background:#fff6fa;padding:22px 24px;margin:28px 0;\">\n  <p style=\"margin:0 0 8px;color:#ff2d70;font-weight:700;text-transform:uppercase;letter-spacing:0.08em;font-size:0.8em;\">The cost runs the wrong way twice<\/p>\n  <p style=\"margin:0;\">You pay more per link, and each link is worth less. On a subfolder setup, the same budget spent on international coverage would have lifted every market at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2>Audit the URLs Shopify Markets built for you<\/h2>\n\n<p>Turn on a market in Shopify and it builds a complete second set of URLs for that country across the whole catalogue, then writes the hreflang tags that vouch for them. Shopify translates nothing, so until somebody does that work by hand, those URLs hold word for word copies of the pages you already had.<\/p>\n\n<p>The maths gets ugly fast. A store with 960 crawlable pages and 12 markets enabled carries 11,520 URLs, and around 10,560 of them are duplicates. Crawl attention gets spread across ten times the surface with no new content in it, so the pages that earn money get visited less often.<\/p>\n\n<p>To see the damage on your own store, pull its sitemap and count how many URLs carry a locale prefix. Shopify includes every market URL in the sitemap it generates, so the total tells you straight away how much of your catalogue has been duplicated. Loaded from a German IP address, the page serves the identical English copy of the primary page.
